I passed my #PhD viva with minor corrections🎉
My thesis explored Black students experiences of stressful life events and how this impacted their health and wellbeing. I hope I made my participants proud🖤
Couldn't have done it w/o my amazing supervisors, family & friends 🇬🇾🇯🇲
I'm looking for KS3 History teachers in London schools to be part of an exciting pilot in Sep or Nov. We, Mapping Black London, have worked with educators & policy-makers to create a 6-week scheme of work on early Black Londoners & digital mapping. Pls share/Msg if interested 😊
@tionneparris Thank you for your reflections, and I fully agree. Sadly our experiences are not unique and the impact on our health is long lasting! Currently working on figuring out how to implement the recommendations effectively, and always open to collab'ing on how to get this done 🙌🏽👏🏽
@tionneparris@temikeita Would love to read if you got it published in the end! It took 1.5 years to get this paper published, lots of rejections, lots of interesting peer review comments...Thankfully Race, Ethnicity and Education was the right home for our paper
The way I ran to read this! 🏃🏾♀️
Sadly it confirms much of my own experience, as well as that of my peers in UK academia. I never thought the actual coursework would be the *easy* part compared to the day-to-day anxieties and struggles to make sure I was "successful"

Read our open-access paper on the impact of racism and other stressful life experiences on Black postgraduate students’ mental health 👩🏾🎓👨🏾🎓
So grateful to the students who shared their stories, collaborators and co authors 🖤
I don't think I've come across an article title that better describes the last two years of my PhD.
“How can I thrive in an institution that hates me?”: impact of racism and other stressful life experiences on black postgraduate students’ mental health". @NkasiStoll 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

I truly love my advisor🥹. PhD programs are already tough enough but having an advisor who sees you as a human being and supports your journey makes the process so much more manageable. When you’re applying to these programs make sure the people you seek to work under are KIND.
Postdocs do a lot of invisible labor in academia. The majority of which is helping PhD students. Many of us are happy to do it, but when students fail to acknowledge that help, especially in front of the PI, it kinda kills the vibe.
Give people credit for their work.
“Dave Onawelo suffered from sickle cell disease, and accurately told them he was suffering from sickle cell crisis - staff told his mother she was being anxious”
Is a VERY key point in this story!!!!!!!!
I've noticed a troubling trend among PhD+Postdocs: fear of openly sharing research or seeking help due to worries that it'll lead to co-authorship & stolen credit. This distrust, fueled by toxic leadership/PIs, threatens the essence & collab spirit needed for scientific progress
