Can someone please explain the logic behind the traffic pattern on Torbay Road northbound, just past the Bypass turn-off? That’s where it narrows from two lanes down to one — and the signage says the left lane yields to the right.
I’ve been driving since I was 16 — I’m now 40 — and I’ve driven all over the U.S. and much of Canada. This is the only place I’ve ever seen a setup where the left lane is instructed to yield to the right in a merge.
To me, this seems counterintuitive and potentially dangerous. Having to yield from the left lane means checking your right-side blind spot, which isn't exactly easy or natural when merging. Surely I’m missing something here… can someone smarter than me explain why this was designed this way?
Avoid skids. When the road is wet, icy or snowy, drive in a smooth and controlled manner to avoid skidding: change your speed gradually and slowly, brake gently, and make smooth, gentle turns. Do not use cruise control. https://t.co/raPhoREdTJ @407ETR#ParachuteVZ#TurnSafetyOn
