@Chem_Warrior Unbelievable. But also, unfortunately, believable. How do we convince colleagues who know their peers mistreat children to call them out?
Again I ask the Twitter #education community: at what point does a District make offering #teachers and adults support for #mentalhealth and #mentalillness a part of how they take care of each other? (And if you think this is already happening, ask your teachers.)
At what point does a District decide they should provide supports for the adults in the same way they do for students when it comes to #mentalhealth, and #mentalillness? Just bc I'm an adult doesn't mean I can handle it any better than my students without a supportive community.
We're here for the kids, who are you here for? At the end of the day, the kids are the priority as they should be. You can't skip over the teachers. We're here for the same reason, I hope, and we all need to support each other first. I can't help my students be ok if I'm not ok.
@soulpancake I wish there was more conversation around the difference between mental health and mental illness. Everyone should focus on #mentalhealth as much as physical health, but that doesn't mean focusing on mental health will "cure" mental illness. It's important, but not enough.
Soooo many #selfcare ideas either don’t acknowledge systemic abuse or treat it as a magical phenomena that cannot be changed. Talking self care without addressing the professional violence committed by schools and systems is only a bandaid, not a solution. #bleedat
Please check in with your #teacher friends today, however that looks for you. This isn't the struggle Olympics. Pain is pain, and a little extra love for someone else can go a long way.
There's no such thing as "business as usual" in #education. Now or ever, and especially after the loss of a colleague. It's okay for #students to see #teachers as humans, who struggle and grieve. Let them see how adults handle tough situations, it's #learning at it's purest.
When will we start to prioritize the #mentalhealth and well-being of our #teachers, admins, and all adults in #education in addition to the support we provide our students? We can't help others when we need help too. FYI: a phone number on your website or yoga class isn't enough.
