Gyatso didn't just love Aang because he was a good monk.

He watched his best friend get taken by the Avatar burden their whole life. Roku never really got to just be a person, every decision, every relationship came second to being the Avatar.

When Aang came, Gyatso wasn't going to let that happen again.

That's why he fought so hard to keep Aang away from the other monks and let him have some fun. Not guilt, it was a second chance to protect someone he already lost once.

The mission he gave Zuko wasn't a real assignment, it was a banishment dressed up as a quest. An impossible condition designed to keep a disgraced son away from the Fire Nation permanently without executing him.

Azula was being kept at court specifically to be groomed as the true heir. Statecraft, military strategy, politics under Ozai's direct supervision. That was her real job.

The moment Ozai confirmed the Avatar was actually still alive the entire calculation changed. He immediately dispatched Azula not to replace Zuko's search but to fix the threat Zuko's incompetence had allowed to grow for two years.

Zuko accidentally found what Ozai thought was impossible. Then Ozai sent the right person to take care of business.

It’s crazy how Suyin was the rogue child, the one who didn’t listen and kept causing problems, while Lin was the perfect one who followed the rules.

In the Kyoshi novels, it's revealed that a messenger hawk cannot survive the cold temperatures of the north/south poles.

Fire Lord Ozai genuinely believed Zuko was a failure and that the Avatar wasn’t a serious threat. Remember, Aang had been missing for 100 years, and most of the Fire Nation thought he was either dead or irrelevant.

Ozai also had:

The world’s strongest military
The Earth Kingdom on the verge of collapse
Sozin’s Comet approaching

From his perspective, victory was inevitable.

His biggest mistake was underestimating both Aang and Zuko. He thought one was a child and the other was a disgrace. In the end, those were the two people who helped bring him down.
