Instead of actually being humane, they prioritized appearing humane. A classic case of virtue signalling. Talking to Rene’s parents and apologizing for their shortcomings was too much. They focused on protecting the university’s image instead. That’s what greed for power does.
Ateneo de Manila University President Fr. Roberto Yap appeared before the NBI on Friday, June 26, to give his sworn testimony regarding the Aurora drowning incident.

@volleybagan It would be mind-boggling that any parent would still let their kid play for the ADMU basketball team when they clearly can’t guarantee their safety.
Sana hindi na kayo makarecover as an institution. Karma is real. You disrespected Rene and Divine's families. Shame!
@gmanews "'Men and Women for Others.'
Puro lip service at performative compassion.
@PhilippineStar Hell Training wasn't just an urban legend. Owners, admins, coaches, and even the balut vendor at Ateneo have known about it for yrs. They tolerated it, turned a blind eye, skipped risk assessments and mitigations because no one died.
All of them are guilty of gross negligence.
"Not standard" nyo mukha nyo!!
I just started to catch up on this.
As someone who studied at the Ateneo and whose favorite UAAP basketball team is the Ateneo Blue Eagles (together with the UP Fighting Maroons), without a doubt Ateneo fucked up BIG TIME!
This statement that they released is just cold!
I just watched the videos of Rene Clert Baterbonia’s grieving mother and I can’t imagine the pain she’s feeling. She can’t stop crying over the sudden loss of her son!
Instead of providing immediate assistance, comfort, and clarity to a grieving family, Ateneo prioritized releasing a public statement. The parents actually had to find out about their own son’s death through social media! OMG!
You completely failed to attend to Rene’s parents and you also didnlt accompany Rene to the funeral home! You didn’t even bother to change his clothes! No staff or coach from the Ateneo Blue Eagles! No consolation, no answers, no just pure negligence.
Nakakainis at nakakadismaya!
JUSTICE FOR RENE and DIVINE!
