Just had my first experience of a Muslim man refusing to sit next to me on public transport. He was clearly religious considering his clothes, and as I sat down on the only vacant train seat which was next to him, he jumped up, shook his head muttering, and half ran to the other carriage.

I don’t mind so much if he’s so fragile he can’t sit next to a woman and so has to scurry off, but I did mind the stares of everyone around me - as if I had done something wrong or had a bad smell about me.

It just feels so regressive doesn’t it.
