24-year-old Andile Madlala from Pietermaritzburg, KZN lost his father in a car accident and nearly abandoned his studies because he couldn’t afford them.

But his community stepped in.

Friends, neighbours, family and university staff helped him continue.

He went on to graduate his Master’s degree Summa Cum Laude and is now pursuing a PhD in Science Education, working to protect African Indigenous knowledge for rural communities.

He has already co-authored his first international research paper.
