I defend the right to protest and dissent. But looting shops and assaulting a defenseless woman cannot be justified as political struggle or human rights.
What’s happening in France is vandalism, not resistance. It is inhumane.
Regarding the events in France, some people seem to believe that Kurds should unconditionally support every protest in the world. No! Kurds are among the peoples best known for their protests and resistance. But the Kurdish struggle is rooted in legitimate and justified demands. With some exceptions, this struggle has been based on democratic methods and the pursuit of fundamental rights.
What democratic demand can possibly justify attacking centuries-old historical monuments and churches, looting shops, or assaulting defenseless people? No, we do not support such vandalism and aggression. Defending the right to protest does not mean legitimizing everything done in the name of protest.
Moreover, when I look at the methods used in these violent incidents in France and the possible ideological motivations behind them, I see a mentality that is all too familiar to us Kurds. We have witnessed similar methods in Rojava, through the attacks of radical Islamist and jihadist groups. As a Kurd, I oppose this mentality and its methods, regardless of who is responsible. ❤️☀️💚
