In 1502, during his 4th voyage, Columbus saw signs of a hurricane—shifting winds, sky changes, sea unrest. He warned the governor of Hispaniola, but was ignored. The Spanish fleet was lost; Columbus' ships survived. One of the earliest recorded hurricane forecasts.
