A strong shallow earthquake (preliminary magnitude ~7.8 per international agencies like GFZ/USGS; PHIVOLCS initially reported 7.0) struck offshore Sarangani Bay near General Santos City (GenSan), Mindanao, Philippines, at 7:37 AM local time on June 8, 2026. It caused intense shaking (Intensity VII in GenSan) and led to building collapses, including multiple Jollibee outlets in the city.

Current status (as of ~2 hours post-quake):
Tsunami warnings remain in effect for coastal areas of Mindanao and nearby regions (possible waves >1 meter). No casualties or fatalities have been reported so far. Aftershocks are ongoing; classes and work are suspended across affected areas, with evacuations urged. Damage assessments and rescue efforts are underway in GenSan. This is a rapidly developing situation—check official sources like PHIVOLCS or local authorities for updates.

Last time this occurred in the region:
The most recent prior significant earthquake to cause notable structural damage and collapses in General Santos City and the southern Mindanao area was the magnitude 6.7 event on November 17, 2023 (Soccsksargen/Davao Region), which also damaged malls and buildings in GenSan and resulted in fatalities from falling debris. Larger historical events in Mindanao (e.g., 1976 Moro Gulf M8.1) were far more destructive but much less recent.
