Detroit is one of the music capitals of the world—the birthplace of Motown, techno and so much more. We are home to thousands of musicians who deserve fair compensation for their work. I introduced legislation to make sure streaming services are paying musicians properly.
UMAW is launching our first ever fundraiser to help us continue to work on campaigns, host educational events, create resources, and mobilize musicians across the globe to create a more just music industry. Can you help us reach our goal? Link in bio to donate and get involved!
Apparently the new Netflix show about Spotify uses our Justice at Spotify action as a storyline, and underlines the fact that Daniel Ek believes it’s not his responsibility to pay artists fairly. The show creates a fictitious future that shows the UMAW equivalent succeeding!
@willmasonmusic But right now all that is important is to organize enough power for working class musicians to redistribute the existing value that the music industry extracts. This isn’t theory, this is labor organizing. And that, as Damon said, is simple.
@willmasonmusic This conversation is always lost in differing time frames. Yes UBI will fix this issue. Yes in a socialist paradigm music will not be valued solely at unit transaction. Yes we can discuss how music plays into socially necessary labor.
Every musician facing issues touring: we need to make recorded music economically viable again. Join us @UMAW_ we are working hard to change this for all of us
With the ongoing pandemic, artists are putting their lives at risk for booking nightmares and incurring thousands of dollars of tour debt.
Santigold is correct. The struggles of touring are rarely ever spoken of. Hoping more big acts will take a stance.
Yes! A resolution to create a new streaming royalty - paid by platforms direct to musicians, no labels involved - is now formally introduced and live in the House! Thank you @RashidaTlaib and @JamaalBowmanNY! Congrats @UMAW_!
Thank you so much to everyone who has checked in and helped us so far. We set up a fund to help recover from this. Link in bio. Much love and see you tonight, Portland! @ Los Angeles, California https://t.co/IOWD5Jn0fs
In the last two days, music workers across the country have sent nearly 7k letters asking their Representatives to sign onto Rep Tlaib's Congressional Resolution for a new streaming royalty. Let's keep pushing, send a letter here: https://t.co/hY9ntnw2If
So proud of the work we’ve been doing at @UMAW_ - this bill could change sla lot about our industry. Please reach out to your representatives and urge them to co-sponsor
That's right!
Many of the people who fill our lives with joy and creativity are also struggling to get by, and that’s in large part because of how corporations have stacked the deck to enrich themselves at the expense of the people creating that art.
