Hello, I am Richard living aboard NB Erica where I host Nighttime on Still Waters, a podcast about canals, life afloat, the elements, nature, and the night.
Could the humble drydock be the perfect example of canal engineering ingenuity? Find out why in our latest episode and join us back afloat onboard the Erica as we explore some surprising facts about this often-overlooked marvel.

While we struggle with the current conditions on the canals, we remember the grit & vision of those who fought for the network.

Stories have always been part of our world. From antiquity, stories create the light that help us find our way through our darkness. Listen with us tonight to summer wind among the alders as we hear an old story that understands our modern world.

Mindshamble's poem Erica's Place unlocked a kaleidoscope of memories—Mum, elevensies, scones, homebrew, and the realization of why Night on Still Waters is shaped the way it is. A beautiful reflection woven into verse.

Tonight, we float upon a starfield of hawthorn blossom under a waxing moon. Why not join us as we continue with the final part of Mum’s account of the ‘totally worthwhile risk that was never regretted.’

It's a spring, moonless night - not quite 'Bible black,' but a perfect night to listen to stories from the past. Tonight we start listening to Mum's account of an enormous step that she and Dad took.

@Love_Austria007 Yes, although she did a bit if writing in Kings Langley, it was only after they moved to Wells that she started on the autobiographical writings.
They would work together in the top room. She writing and Dad either mending things or working on his models.
@Love_Austria007 Aw, thank you, Liz. We tended to hear it as fragmented stories - little anecdotes that fitted into a conversational flow, so it's really nice to hear it as a whole - it also adds new colours to them.
Tonight, as the barometer drops and a speculative wind kicks blackthorn blossom along the towpath, we continue to listen to Mum's account of their new life in Canada in the late 1950s.

A winter’s night on the canal. A snug cabin and a warm stove. It’s the perfect night to curl up and listen to accounts of life on the canals in winters past.

Why not join us as we gather around the stove on a bitingly cold night of sleety squalls as we celebrate the joys of a warm fire and three stars to guide us through our night.

@banditcaz1 Aw, Sorry!
It had crossed my mind. There's actually quite a few really good musicians on the cut. My main problem was that I needed to do something sooner than later and commissioning a work can take a long time - partic. one that needs to fit so closely with the podcast's tone.
There's a lot of changes occuring recently. It's easy to be overwhelmed by it. How do we find the stillness, the balance, within the flow of movement? To regain our balance in the tilt of change, and the still-point amid the chaos.

Tonight we huddle around the cabin stove on a night of ice and freezing fog, as we listen to Sue Wilkes on ice-breaking during the days of horse power, and Tom Rolt over-wintering at Banbury.
