Sexual Harassment as defined in the UP policy is a very broad definition.

The reason for this is in order to accommodate various types of sexual harassment that could possibly occur.

UP defines sexual harassment as, but not limited to, victimisation, quid pro quo harassment and sexual favouritism. A single incident of unwelcome sexual conduct may constitute sexual harassment.

In defining sexual harassment, the policy’s main focus is on submission rather than resistance.

This is because of the simple reason that many people who are the victims of sexual harassment are being forced to submit owing to their circumstances and power dynamics that come into play.

Each case is evaluated on its own merit.

How would one go about lodging a complaint of sexual harassment at the University of Pretoria?

It is recommended that when a student lodges a complaint, that they start at the Transformation Office which is located in the Akanyang Building.

The student needs to send an email with a short description of what they are reporting.

An investigating officer from the Transformation Office will be allocated and in some cases it may be referred to the security services investigation unit.

The investigating officer is the one who will require a full story of the incident.

The reporting part of the case has a minimum time of 2 months.

The alleged perpetrator will be given an opportunity to find a defense lawyer while the survivour of the sexual assault will be afforded a lawyer by the University.

If the student is in a residence that is provided for by the University, the student can report the case to the residence house parent and they will then report the case to the transformation office.

Students can also lodge a case with the Student Representative Council's transformation office.

There are two types of outcomes in this situation.

A formal outcome and an informal outcome.

In the informal outcome an attempt will be made to have restorative justice between the victim and alleged perpetrator.
