The Old Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame Was Actually Loki

After defeating Thanos, Steve went back to return the Infinity Stones. He was supposed to return to his original timeline, but instead chose to stay with Peggy.

According to this theory, Loki later visited Steve, warned him that his presence was creating branch timelines and multiversal destruction, and offered to relocate him to another universe where he could live peacefully with his family.

Steve agreed, but asked Loki to do one favour: return to the main timeline and give Sam Wilson the shield. That’s why Loki disguised himself as Steve.

And the biggest clue is the time machine. Every Avenger returned exactly to the platform where it was located, but old Steve was already sitting on a bench far away. So Steve never returned using the machine. Loki used a TVA TemPad to enter the main timeline, disguised as Steve, and gave Sam the shield.
