Today would have been my dad’s 66th birthday. He was shot twice in the back by a schizophrenic man he was sponsoring in AA when I was only 2 years old. I wish I was able to get to know him and that he was able to see the person I grew into. I always wonder if he would have agreed with me on my takes or what he would have thought about my life choices. I wonder how much different my life could have been with a father in my life.

Anyway. Happy birthday daddy. I miss you.

Your sweet face is full of color again, and that sparkle in your eyes says it all. It’s been 24 hours since your EVD was removed and 72 hours since they clamped it. We’re trending in the right direction after your cranioplasty. The incisions are healing beautifully. Even the neurosurgeons commented this morning on how wonderful you look and how impressed they are with your progress.

At this rate, we should be heading back to the rehab facility this afternoon. And starting tomorrow, my Maya Bear can finally have her showers again ❤️

I believe in you with all my heart. Your strength is unmatched, and you continue to amaze me every single day. You’re already doing incredible things, and I know even greater ones are ahead.

This is my Mom.

She died from ALS at age 47.

I was her primary caregiver for the 3 years before she, mercifully, passed away in her sleep in her own bed.

She was the strongest woman I’ve ever known.

A devout Christian, she never lost her faith in God, despite how much she suffered and the inescapable physical pain she felt every day.

Sometimes I dream about her. Mostly, they’re good dreams and I cry when I wake up because it was just a dream.

But sometimes it’s a nightmare that shakes me to my core. And I see her so frail, shrinking before my eyes until I lose her all together again.

Watching someone you love suffer, in constant pain, dying slowly in front of you, is a devastating experience.

It changes you.

Depression. PTSD. It all hit me. Hard.

I’ve lived longer without my Mom than the years I had with her. I can’t adequately describe how jarring that thought is to me.

She never got to meet any of her great granddaughters, but I think she would enjoy knowing that the oldest one is named after her.

Yeah.

I think she would love that.

So, if you still have your Mom with you, you’re very blessed. Make sure she knows it. There will come a time when you would give anything to hear her voice just one more time.
