THE DAVIDS AND NIGERIANS

The past week was nothing short of a revelation: David Adeleke and David Hundeyin, two men with the courage to take on their own Goliaths, stood unshaken in the face of overwhelming odds. But instead of rallying behind them as the Israelites did for the Biblical David, Nigerians have chosen betrayal, mockery, and outright ingratitude.

David Hundeyin, a journalist who has sacrificed his safety, comfort, and even his home for the truth, now finds himself being dragged before an English court for exposing the rot in Nigeria. He is a man who has faced death threats, state persecution, and exile—all because he dared to dream of a better Nigeria. Yet, what do Nigerians do? They reduce his life’s work to whispers about his failed marriage. How is it that a nation so desperate for salvation can be so cruel to one of its own saviors?

David Adeleke, a voice loved around the world, risked it all to speak the truth about the shambolic state of Nigeria’s economy. He didn’t have to. He could have remained silent, enjoying the comfort of his wealth and global fame. But instead, he chose to scream from the rooftops, calling out the suffering of ordinary Nigerians and the mass exodus of companies. And for what? For his honesty, he has been accused of hypocrisy because his father happens to have investments in Nigeria. Should he have lied? Should he have pretended all is well while his people starve? Is this what we’ve become? A nation that demands silence from those with the courage to speak the truth?

This is betrayal at its peak. It is heartbreaking. Nigerians cry out daily, begging for their elites and celebrities to lend their voices to the cause of justice, to the fight for a better nation. Yet when these Davids stand up, they are dragged through the mud. David Hundeyin, who risks his life with every article, is mocked for things that have no bearing on the depth of his sacrifice. David Adeleke, who dares to expose the truth, is condemned for the audacity of caring too much.

Imagine for a moment what these men have given up. Hundeyin has no home, no safety, no guarantee that he will see tomorrow. He could have chosen the easy path, blending into the crowd and living a quiet life abroad. Adeleke could have stayed in his bubble, smiling for cameras and singing songs that bring joy to millions, never once mentioning the pain of his homeland. Yet both men chose us. They chose to fight for a country that spits on their sacrifices.

What kind of people bite the hand that fights for them? How do we repay courage with mockery and betrayal? How do we, as a nation, sleep at night knowing we have crucified the very people who refuse to give up on us?

Nigerians, take a long, hard look at yourselves. Tomorrow, when the silence becomes deafening, when no one dares to speak truth to power, remember that you silenced your Davids. When the walls close in and no one comes to your defense, remember the names of those you mocked, betrayed, and abandoned. You do not deserve them.

The man whose picture you are seeing was said to have collapsed along Mile 2 Dubar Road on his way to work and was rushed to the Accident & Emergency Ward of Isolo General Hospital by Good Samaritans four days ago.

It was discovered that all the items on him was stolen and had no means of identification on him when he was brought to Isolo General Hospital where the Medical team immediately commenced treatment. He is gradually regaining consciousness.
