August 31, 1968. The first wave of the communist August Offensive came to an end, closing out the last of the three great enemy pushes that made 1968 the bloodiest, most pivotal year of the war.

It had begun in late January with the famous Tet Offensive, continued with a second wave in May, and finished with this third effort launched on August 17. Across all three, the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong had thrown themselves at the cities, bases, and firebases of South Vietnam, and across all three they had been slaughtered in the open by American and South Vietnamese firepower. The August wave alone cost them tens of thousands of men for no lasting ground. Militarily, 1968 was a catastrophe for the communists, and the Viet Cong in particular, the southern guerrillas, were gutted so badly they never fully recovered. From here on, North Vietnamese regulars would carry more and more of the war.

And yet, this is the great paradox of the whole conflict. The enemy lost the battles of 1968 decisively, and still those battles won them the war in the long run. The shock of Tet, the sight of the enemy attacking everywhere at once after years of official promises that the end was near, broke something in American public opinion. It convinced a majority at home that the war could not be won at a price worth paying.

So the guns fell quiet at the end of August 1968 over a strange truth. On the battlefield, America and its ally had won a crushing victory. On the only field that finally mattered, the will of the American people, they had begun to lose.
