Dr Pippa Letchworth is a consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology and one of our longest serving faculty surgeons.
Here she packs a 'Pippa' pouch named after her. This was the incentive of Oliver Bonas our fabulous corporate partner, who named some of their products after our female surgeons.
Buy one of these products, and a proportion of the proceeds is given to our Foundation to support our work training surgeons in countries facing conflict and catastrophe.
Go out and grab yourself a 'Pippa' bag and think of our surgeons as they prepare for their incredible life saving work.

"I want to help the people here, because the people suffered for a long time. I stayed here all the time in the war - I watched it. Most of the doctors leave Syria and go. I am the only obstetrics and gynaecology doctor in all my area. I told my husband if all the people leave Syria and go, who is staying here to help these people? I choose to stay with the people. And I look to the future."

"I've always been invested in humanitarian work. The more I got involved, the more I wanted to do it. It's so rewarding, you get to share your knowledge and your skills and meet so many different types of people. And I also learn so much from the people I interact with in all parts of the world. I feel enriched."

'For me, the basics is the disparity in maternal healthcare. By the accident of birth, you can be born in a country where you or your friends, family, sisters, siblings have a high risk of dying through pregnancy and pregnancy related complications. That's what motivates me.'

“I’ve always wanted justification for spending my life doing what I’m doing. We know we’re not brain surgeons, or politicians. It is good to know that the struggle is worth it, that all the pestering and nit-picking we do is really for some good purpose.”
– Janet Ahlberg, Illustrator
I have been designing for over 14 years for (mostly) charities and feel privileged to direct my professional focus on something purposeful in this world. But there is nothing quite like being in a room full of qualified trauma surgeons to make you feel like “just a designer”.

It was a privilege to meet with Ukrainian veterans today at a military hospital in Kyiv.
I’m proud that the patients here have been supported by a UK charity who have trained over 1,000 surgeons, anaesthetists, and other healthcare workers.
Our support for Ukraine is unwavering, and I’m glad to be here to show it in person.
Khrystyna Kachamar, our Ukraine Country Manager, presents Ukrainian Minister of Defence, Yevheniy Khmara, with a signed copy of War Doctor by our Co-Founder, David Nott, and a box containing one of our prosthetic hearts used to teach surgeons life-saving skills.
The presentation took place this week as part of Andy Burnham's first official visit to the country which was also attended by our CEO James Gough, and faculty anaesthetist, Viktoriia Teslenko.
We are delighted to announce that one of our leading anaesthetic faculty members, Jenny Illingworth has been shortlisted for HSJ Clinical Leader of the year.
Clinical Leader of the Year is an individual award for a clinician who has shown leadership that has made a significant difference to patients.
From the DNF side it covers her contribution as a surgical trainer in our hostile environment surgical training (HEST®-A) courses, and coordinating our ‘observership’ for UK and Ukrainian surgeons to share knowledge and observe each others’ practice, conducted this year in St Mary’s Paddington and to be continued in other UK hospitals this autumn.
For the NHS side the award covers the work Jenny has been doing in population health & smoking cessation for Imperial & NW London.
Please support us in wishing Jenny every success!
Viktoriia Teslenko, one of our lead Ukrainian faculty, met Prime Minister Andy Burnham yesterday in Kyiv during his first international visit as UK leader.
Since the Russian invasion in February 2022, we have made a commitment to Ukrainian doctors, training almost 1000 healthcare workers. Our mission is to empower medical professionals facing multiple war wounds on the ground.
This year, Viktoriia took part in our UK-Ukraine ‘observership’ as part of the landmark UK-Ukraine 100-year partnership which started in 2025.
Viktoriia and 3 other Ukrainian surgeons spent ten days working in two UK hospitals in London and in Newcastle. We have further exchanges of this kind planned for the autumn.
Viktoriia said: 'On a day like this, our Independence Day, meeting the PM of the UK has given me hope. To show him Ukraine and Ukrainians and what this country means to us. We are seeing so many attacks, with many more patients arriving from the frontline. We need partners, we need knowledge, we need the support of all who care about freedom.'
Our leader James Gough talks to our leader @andyburnham in Kyiv yesterday, about saving lives in Ukraine.
We are honoured that our CEO James Gough and Faculty anaesthetist Viktoriia Teslenko were with the British Prime Minister Andy Burnham at Kyiv Military Clinical Hospital today, as part of the PM's first official visit as UK Prime Minister.
