👩⚕️👁️ Many congratulations to eye therapeutics start-up OcuHealth on winning the NovaUCD 2025 VentureLaunch Accelerator Programme.
The company, represented on the programme by Dr Alison Reynolds of the UCD School of Veterinary Medicine and UCD Conway Institute, is pioneering a once-a-day eye drop that offers significantly improved treatment options compared with current therapies.
Eye drops are the preferred method of delivering medicines to the eye, with over 90% of ophthalmic drugs available in drop formulations. However, because drops are quickly washed away, they often need to be administered frequently throughout the day and at higher doses to ensure sufficient absorption.
To address this, OcuHealth has developed a patented Sustained Microemulsion release Technology (SMrT) that enables extended delivery of hydrophobic and hydrophilic drugs, small molecules and monoclonal antibodies to the front of the eye, significantly increasing drug absorption.
A joint project between University College Dublin and South East Technological University (SETU), the company has received €700k in Enterprise Ireland Commercialisation Fund support and is being backed by technology transfer offices at SETU and NovaUCD.
OcuHealth, an emerging eye therapeutics start-up, has been named winner of UCD's 2025 VentureLaunch Accelerator Programme, delivered by @NovaUCD to support the creation and launch of new start-ups emerging from @ucddublin.
