#HAPPENING_NOW: Today marks 22 years since the Gatumba massacre of Aug 13, 2004, when over 160 Congolese Banyamulenge refugees; mostly women and children; were killed at a UNHCR-run camp in Gatumba, Burundi.

Rwanda’s Banyamulenge community is commemorating the anniversary under the theme “Remember, Seek Justice & Condemn Genocide Ideology in DRC.”

PALIPEHUTU-FNL claimed responsibility for the attack. Alleged links to FDLR, the Congolese army, and Mai-Mai militias remain disputed and unresolved to this day.
