Remember when Russia knocked Spain out of the 2018 World Cup?

After 120 minutes, Igor Akinfeev saved penalties from Koke and Iago Aspas, stopping the latter with his outstretched foot in one of the tournament’s most iconic moments.

That is the kind of drama, unpredictability, and sporting history Russia might have contributed to this World Cup.

Instead, politics decided that football would be better without Russia, but that’s okay. At least our soccer players aren’t forced to wear pink boots and a kit with pink accents.
