Today (April 11, 2026) is National Pet Day in the United States.

The day was founded in 2006 by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige to celebrate the joy #pets bring, raise awareness for shelter animals, and encourage adoption and better care for pets that may not always get enough attention.

While it started in the US, it has gained popularity in other countries too, including the UK, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, and more. People around the world often mark it with extra cuddles, treats, photos, or donations to shelters.
