Simple version for a 7-year-old:

Think of people like paint colors from a big family tree that split at different times.

Ashkenazi Jews mixed European paint with Middle Eastern paint. Those two are close shades (split not that long ago). Heavy European mixing over centuries keeps them right next to Italians and Greeks on the genetic map.
