The 36th Chess Olympiad was organised in Calvia on the Spanish Island of Mallorca between October 14 and October 31, 2004. There were 129 teams in the open event and 87 in the women's event.
The team of Ukraine, led by Vassily Ivanchuk, won the open event with a margin of 3 points ahead of Russia and Armenia. In the women's section, China collected a new title, this time ahead of the U.S. team, led for the first and last time by Susan Polgar and the Russian team.
