Yoon Suk Yeol is trying to usher in another era of dictatorial rule in South Korea. Overlaying his speech with the dictator’s of old, @mbcnews asks the South Korean public, which side of history will you stand on?
"The PPP now faces a critical juncture: attempt to regain public trust by distancing itself from Yoon and supporting impeachment or risk...potentially look(ing) complicit in the president’s attempted coup," write experts @KaitlynTKing and @nslavney

Investigations into #YoonSukYeol's alleged corruption & mishandling of domestic issues are underway, placing pressure on his admin. The fallout may redefine #SouthKorea's political landscape for years to come. More on this from @KaitlynTKing & I here: https://t.co/29fwcVBfhA
Right now, the PPP has stated that they will not support the impeachment of Yoon. But will they stick to this line, or try to cut ties? And if LJM is toast, who is the next likely DP candidate? https://t.co/cQSeEqtXsO
A big question as Yoon's impeachment looms: Who are the front runners from the PPP and DP? Lee Jae-myung is currently appealing an indictment for 2022 election meddling. If that appeal fails, he will be banned from running in 2027, which I assume would apply to a snap election?
The third most popular party in the April election was the National Innovation Party, led by former Justice Minister Cho Kuk under the Moon Jae-in administration. This is extra spicy because Yoon was the prosecutor who forced Cho to resign.
🔊Research Analyst @nslavney spoke with @NPR@1a on the situation in #SouthKorea and covered both the domestic and international implications for President Yoon's failed martial law declaration.

What’s going on in #SouthKorea? We’ll look at the reasons behind the President’s attempt to impose martial law and what it shows about the state of democracy in a country that emerged from military rule in 1987. With @NeaveBarker@nslavney@darciedraudt and Prof BJ Kim
Democratic Party statement: "Lifting martial law won't save Yoon from insurrection charges. He has shown the nation he cannot govern. He must resign immediately".
White House spokesperson on Yoon Suk Yeol lifting martial law:
“We are relieved President Yoon has reversed course on his concerning declaration of martial law and respected the ROK National Assembly’s vote to end it. Democracy is at the foundation of the US-ROK alliance..."
