✊ We will not accept a partially funded pay award.
Forcing schools to foot the bill for pay rises out of already depleted budgets will only deepen the crisis in education. Our children deserve better.
We need to decide our next steps together.
This Saturday, we are launching a member poll to determine how we move toward a formal ballot for industrial action.
🗳️ The poll opens this Saturday and is live for ONE WEEK ONLY.
The governments starting point:
- 6.5% over 3 years.
- 1265 "reviewed"
- pay award to be funded entirely from existing budgets
From here we engaged in an indicative ballot. (90% yes for action)
The governments current position:
- 3.5% this year. 3% next year.
- 1265 remains.
- Schools to fund £460m collectively. (Make cuts to jobs/resources)
Tomorrow we begin polling members on this current position.

A pay rise that isn’t fully funded means schools will have to meet the shortfall from already overstretched budgets, leading to cuts to vital services. The NEU will campaign to make sure government invests in education. #FundFairPay#SaveOurSchools

🤔 Time to set the record straight!
✔️ Lack of classroom resources.
✔️ Not enough new teachers.
And the government’s solution? An unfunded 2.8% pay rise, leaving 76% of primaries and 94% of secondaries unable to cover costs next year.

An 🐘 in the room here.
Starmer is gearing up to be the first Labour PM since Callaghan to get schools to make cuts.
Pigs don't get fatter the more you weigh them. Its not inspection that improves schools.
We need investment rather than being asked to make "efficiencies"
We all want to see an improving school system, but Ofsted's new report card wont deliver it:
1) Pigs don't get fatter the more you weigh them!
It's not inspection that leads to school improvement. To improve education it requires investment and working with schools over time.
2) The new framework will make things worse not better.
@Ofstednews were tasked with creating a system of inspection that reduced pressure on the school system. 8 areas of measurement and a 5 point scale creates 40 areas of judgement. The Nandos style colour coding will be more brutal than a single-phrase judgement.
3) Ofsted judgements are already unreliable, they will be even more so...
8 areas of measurement, to take place in a 2-day inspection is a nonsense.
40% of the attainment gap starts before a child enters school. The criteria that disadvantaged children are achieving the same as their peers will lead to more of the same.... schools in deprived areas getting poor judgements even if they making excellent progress.
4) The Big Listen was Big Spin!
Ofsted is incapable of reforming itself. They claim to have listened to the profession, but it clearly went in one ear and out the other.
Their own whistleblowers say this has been rushed.
It is toxic and discredited organisation - it will take more than changing a chief inspector to change.
It needs to go.
Rising costs + an unfunded teacher pay rise = a budget disaster for thousands of schools. Chancellor @RachelReevesMP must change course and invest in education now.
