@NunoSempere I’d say this is 40% settling of grudges or other motivated reasoning and 60% valuable feedback, which as far as these types of posts go is a pretty good ratio (usually >80%).
@sharongoldman@NIST Shameful article. EA is less “biased” and more open-minded than any political party, what is with this double standard? Maybe some employees have an issue with EA, why is that different from any other appointment? Democrats will always strain being under a republican & vice-versa
@catehall A1. All good, easy training data has been used, synthetic data is bad
And
A2. Improvements such as RL will be incremental or FLOP limitations
Or
B. Due to success of compression, better paths to TAI (making AI agentic?) will be ignored for 5-10 years.
Est: 50/50 of TAI by 2040
@MWCvitkovic Lots of CROs have investment arms, so technically doing what your suggesting, but their emphasis is always on the CRO side, not the investment side.
After a deep review of our potential paths to impact and $$$, we've decided to discontinue Alvea's core operations & return remaining funds (~1y of runway) to investors. It's been a wild ride these past 1.5 yrs—huge thank you to all who've supported us ♥️ Reflections coming soon!
@KylerCora “Look, I would totally save lives and reduce the excruciating suffering of others, if only the movement catered to my specific psychological needs and aesthetics”
@robinhanson …which is why effective altruism was invented. Is avoiding existential risks a bad investment? It might be the best investment in the history of humanity, if your time horizon isn’t in quarters.
Seasonal flu vaccines are updated yearly and do not require clinical trials beforehand; we should do the same for COVID-19.
Requiring clinical trials for each update would delay approval by four months (!), during which a new variant could wreak havoc.

@SpencrGreenberg Cluelessness. See link below, although I don't buy that longtermism is the answer to cluelessness, in fact I think since we can only know what's under the lamppost, that's what we should focus on. (https://t.co/VOv0LWi31z)
@futa_rchy @brianluidog Precautionary principle is what I was thinking. I think it’s appropriate to apply it in cases of great uncertainty and particularly when the intervention has the potential of great harm (assuming 1:1 pain equivalence).
@brianluidog Many EAs think differently, if it takes 1000 bivalves suffering to equal the meat of 1 cow, at the very least you’ll need to prove that a bivalves experience <1/1000 the pain of a cow which is currently impossible. Many equate all sentient pain 1:1.
@americanzhao@NathanpmYoung There is no evidence, just guilt by association so you don’t even have to make that tradeoff. There is good evidence of him saving millions of people so I’m surprised by EAs wondering if Gates is a good guy or not.
@StefanFSchubert@erikphoel Yes but a majority of depression and anxiety cases are fixable, and chronic illnesses, by definition, are not, and they cause depression and anxiety on top of it, and also lead to suicide. Replying to someone expressing anguish at chronic illness with "other people suffer too"...
