A partnership between Northwestern and the Illinois Department of Corrections, providing high-quality liberal arts education to incarcerated students in IL.
Yesterday's graduation marked an extraordinary milestone for our graduates, @NorthwesternU, and for incarcerated people in the U.S.
The day also gave Michael Broadway, an NPEP graduate, the opportunity to reunite with his mother, whom he hadn't seen in nearly 20 years.
For the first time, prisoners in the US received degrees from one of the country's top 10 universities in a moving occasion for graduates and program faculty alike
Congratulations to recent NPEP graduate, Benard McKinley, on his acceptance to @NorthwesternLaw!

Welcome home, Benard!
Yesterday, Benard McKinley — one of 16 students who graduated in November's bachelor's degree graduation — visited @NorthwesternU's campus for the first time.
"For so long I've desired or pictured this moment to actually be able to witness it and feel is definitely breathtaking," Benard told @ABC7Chicago. "It's been a long time. I just feel grateful."
Jennifer Lackey has received the @NorthwesternU's 2024 Daniel I. Linzer Award for Faculty Excellence in Diversity and Equity for her leadership with @NUPrisonEd, which made history in 2023 when incarcerated students inside Stateville Correctional Center were the first in U.S. history to be conferred a bachelor’s degree from a top ten university. She also co-leads @BuffettInst's Epistemic Reparations Global Working Group. https://t.co/JYg1NNuq6E
