🇬🇲🇬🇲: President Adama Barrow used the inauguration of the Sanyang Beachside Road to argue that tribal politics is both impractical and harmful in The Gambia. He said Fulas, Mandinkas, Jolas, Wolofs and other groups already live side by side and intermarry, so treating ethnicity as a political dividing line is out of step with ordinary family life. The appeal itself is not new. Barrow has made similar arguments for years and has described his own background as mixed Mandinka, Fula and Sarahule. What gives the remarks weight is the calendar.

The presidential election is scheduled for 5 December 2026, and Barrow is seeking a third term. The main public challengers are UDP leader Ousainu Darboe and Kanifing Mayor Talib Bensouda, who is running under Coalition 2026. Recent polling has shown Barrow ahead nationally but short of a secure majority, with support varying by region and generation. In that setting, ethnic appeals become a shortcut for mobilisation and a risk if they inflame the other side.

Barrow, Darboe and Bensouda have all spoken against tribalism, yet the charge keeps circulating. Opposition figures have accused Barrow and NPP allies of ethnic patronage; government-aligned voices have accused UDP networks of Mandinka-centred politics. Separate controversies, including leaked remarks by officials and an imam’s attack on Bensouda’s ancestry, have kept the issue alive. Bensouda has gone further than a general warning and pledged to criminalise tribalism, a campaign promise rather than current law.

The country is small and mixed rather than a collection of sealed blocs. Recent census-style figures put Mandinkas at about a third of the population, Fulas at about a quarter and Wolofs at about 15 percent, with Jolas, Sarahules and smaller groups making up the rest. No single community can win a national election alone. Intermarriage and shared towns are real, but so are regional concentrations and the temptation, in a tight race, to treat those concentrations as vote banks. Barrow’s argument at Sanyang is the standard national-unity line. The harder test is whether parties drop ethnicity as an organising tool when they need votes. That test usually comes late in a campaign, not at a road opening.

President Adama Barrow has criticized some of his political rivals seeking the presidency, accusing them of lacking the courage to confront former President Yahya Jammeh during his rule.

Barrow said some of those now presenting themselves as presidential contenders had fled the country or remained silent during the Jammeh era, only returning or becoming politically vocal after the change of government in 2017.

“Those who were scared during Jammeh’s time are the ones beating their chests now, saying they want the presidency,” Barrow said. “Those who ran away and were scared to come back until I won, and those who were hiding under their beds, are now the ones seeking the presidency.”

He questioned their commitment to the country, arguing that those who genuinely cared about The Gambia should have joined efforts to bring an end to Jammeh’s rule.

“They don’t want this country; they only want the position,” he said. “If they loved this country, they should have come out when we were fighting to liberate the country.”

Barrow also urged supporters of his National People’s Party not to be intimidated by their political opponents, reminding them that the NPP is the governing party. He described being in government while remaining fearful of political opponents as “Dingkurung Ya.”
