Can genetics influence our motivation to exercise? Yes!
While our mental stamina and psychological response to exercise is complex, the BDNF gene has been identified as a genetic factor that influences our response to exercise and future exercise behavior.
Individuals who have the AA or AG genotype of the BDNF gene derive greater enjoyment or pleasure from exercise, compared to those with the GG genotype.
Additionally, during exercise those with the AA or AG genotypes experience a lower perception of their effort, which is associated with greater intentions to exercise. Based on these differences, individuals with the AA or AG genotype have an ‘enhanced’ motivation to exercise, and are more likely to be active long-term.
Those with the GG variant on the other hand experience a typical innate motivation to exercise, as they experience a higher rate of perceived effort during exercise, and less pleasure from exercise.
As a Nutrigenomix practitioner, what advice can you give to your clients with the GG variant of BDNF who struggle with making physical activity a regular part of their routine? Here are our suggestions:
✔ Choose activities that you enjoy rather than ones you feel you ‘should’ participate in.
✔ Schedule exercise for a time that is convenient and realistic so you’re less likely to miss workouts.
✔ Exercise for the fitness level you’re currently at to avoid overtraining and injuries.
✔ Join a group class or exercise with a friend. Adding a social or community element can improve consistency and add to our enjoyment of any activity.

What role does caffeine play in mental health? ☕️
When it comes to caffeine and its impacts on mental health, we can look to the ADORA2A gene, which plays a role in how the brain interacts with caffeine.
The ADORA2A gene encodes one of the main receptors for adenosine. Adenosine has many functions in the body, including promoting sleep and calmness. Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors, resulting in the stimulating effects of coffee, tea, chocolate and other caffeinated food products and supplements
For individuals with the TT genotype, consumption of even 100mg of caffeine (the amount in approximately 1 small cup of coffee) can increase feelings of anxiety.
Meanwhile, for those with the CC or CT genotype, consuming caffeine has no effect on anxiety levels.
Understanding these genetic differences can help you provide personalized nutrition advice to your patients, enhancing their mental well-being.

Today is National Lemonade Day!
Lemons are a great source of vitamin C, which is an essential nutrient and powerful antioxidant that supports immune function and skin health, aids in iron absorption of non-heme (plant) iron, and supports bone and tissue repair.
Low blood levels of vitamin C have been associated with an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer. Vitamin C is needed for collagen production/connective tissue formation, and is an antioxidant that plays a role in tissue recovery after exercise.
However, studies that have examined the role of vitamin C and various health outcomes have been inconsistent.
Research has shown that the amount of ascorbic acid (i.e. vitamin C) circulating in the blood can differ between individuals even when the same amount of vitamin C is consumed. This can be explained by individual genetic differences in a gene called glutathione S- transferase T1 (GSTT1).
Glutathione S-transferases, or GSTs, are a large family of detoxifying enzymes that play a role in the glutathione-ascorbic acid antioxidant cycle in the human body. GSTs work with vitamin C to reduce oxidative stress and they can spare each other from oxidation. One class of the GST enzyme family is the theta class, which consists of the GSTT1 enzyme.
There is a common “deletion” variant in the gene that codes for the GSTT1 enzyme. Those who have two copies of the “deletion” variant do not produce a functional GSTT1 enzyme, while those with even a single copy of the “insertion” version produce GSTT1 with normal functional activity.
This means that for your clients with the elevated risk genotype, consuming adequate vitamin C consistently is necessary to reduce the risk of deficiency.

Research has shown that people who receive personalized, DNA-based dietary recommendations report better understanding and adherence to that advice when compared to those who receive more generic nutrition information.
If you are a healthcare professional who helps individuals make healthier lifestyle choices, this can have a significant impact on the success your clients have with reaching their goals.
The genetic insights in a Nutrigenomix 70-gene test can help your clients better understand the specific lifestyle changes that will have the biggest impact on optimizing their health and wellness.
Different types and amounts of dietary fats for example, can impact cardiometabolic health, body composition, and waist circumference.
For clients, knowing their genotypes in relation to different types of fats in their diet can help them make more meaningful improvements to their dietary habits.

How can our genetics influence iron status?
Iron is an essential mineral that is required for transporting oxygen around the body, building a strong immune system, and synthesizing enzymes for various bodily functions.
Low iron status can lead to anemia, which is associated with fatigue, pale skin, weakness, shortness of breath, dizziness and reduced aerobic capacity. Chronically, anemia can cause heart problems, reduce immune function, impair athletic performance, and impact fertility and pregnancy outcomes.
Several genes that play a role in iron absorption, transport, and utilization in the body have been identified. Together, these genes can predict an individual’s genetic risk for low iron status.
✔️ The TMPRSS6 gene codes for the protein matriptase-2, which affects hepcidin levels that help to regulate gut iron absorption.
✔️ The transferrin receptor 2 (TFR2) gene codes for the TFR2 protein, which helps iron to enter into cells.
✔️ The transferrin (TF) gene codes for the protein transferrin, which is mainly responsible for transporting iron in the body.
Our Nutrigenomix 70-gene test panel uses an algorithm to determine your client’s risk of low iron status based on these 3 genes. Individuals who are at higher risk of low iron status can take steps to optimize their iron intake and absorption.

Today is International Beer Day! 🍺
Beer is one of the oldest beverages in the world dating back to 5,000 BC. It is the most widely consumed alcoholic beverage, with 50 billion gallons of beer consumed worldwide each year.
Did you know that your genetics can influence the effects that alcohol has on your body?
The ALDH2 gene encodes mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase, which catalyzes the conversion in the liver of acetaldehyde, (a major product of ethanol breakdown), into acetate, a less toxic compound.
Variations in the ALDH2 gene have been shown to lead to changes in this enzyme activity, which leads to a buildup of acetaldehyde in those who carry the ‘risk’ variant.
While everyone should be mindful of their alcohol intake, individuals who carry the risk variant of the ALDH2 gene may need to be even more careful of not over-indulging.

Despite the popularity of coffee worldwide, many of your clients have likely wondered if coffee is good or bad for their health.
While studies looking at caffeine consumption have shown mixed results for different populations, research shows that these differences may be attributed to genetic variation in the major caffeine metabolizing enzyme, called cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2). CYP1A2 is responsible for more than 95% of caffeine metabolism in the liver and represents the rate-limiting step in caffeine breakdown.
Individuals with the ‘GG’ genotype are considered to be “fast” caffeine metabolizers. Those with the ‘GA’ or ‘AA’ genotype are “slow” metabolizers.
So, what does this mean for your clients and their caffeine consumption?
Among “fast” caffeine metabolizers, research shows that there is no increased risk of heart disease with caffeine consumption. On the other hand, “slow” metabolizers experience a significantly increased risk of heart disease when consuming 2 or more cups of coffee per day. These individuals also don’t benefit from caffeine when used as a pre-workout supplement.
Knowing which genotype your client has can help you provide more personalized and accurate nutrition recommendations, and make a bigger impact on your client’s health and wellbeing.

Genetic testing, myth vs fact!
❌ Myth: General nutrition and exercise recommendations are just as effective at helping clients make health behavior changes.
☑️ Fact: Actionable DNA-based advice is more effective than general advice at modifying behavior, and also more effective than personalized advice that does not incorporate genetic information.
One of the controversies of genetic testing for personalized nutrition revolves around its utility for behavior modification. Although some studies show that personalized advice of any kind is better than general advice at changing food intake habits, studies that have specifically examined the effects of genetic information (using a Nutrigenomix test) on behavior change consistently show that DNA-based advice is more effective than general advice at modifying behavior, and also more effective than personalized advice that does not incorporate genetic information.
