In an interview to Al Jazeera, president-elect @Mmuizzu let slip his apparent climate skepticism. He trivialized the problem, claiming its “not so serious” for the Madlives.

We won’t let this kind of rhetoric become the narrative. The science is clear. Climate change is an existential threat to the Maldives, and must be treated as such– the Maldivian people are not far away from being climate refugees.

@nasa explains that more than 80% of islands in the Maldives are less than 1m above sea level. Current projections for sea-level rise by @ipcc_ch (a massive collective of climate scientists and governments; if you believe in science you believe what they say) are estimated to be around 1m by 2100- enough to make most islands totally disappear.

However, the biggest risk from climate change isn't that the islands completely sink into the ocean. Even if sea-level were to rise by 0.5m by 2050, and the islands don't completely disappear, these islands would face substantial erosion, lose access to fresh water, face regular flooding, and would be battered by storms and sea waves. Just because the island exists, doesn't mean it will be livable.

Muizzu claims that we "don't see the sea level rise going out that much" - a complete and total lie.

Between 1880 and 1993, sea level rose by about 11cm. But what's worrying isn't JUST the fact that the sea level keeps rising. It's that the increase in SLR per year keeps going up; it only took 30 years for another 10cm increase between 1993 and 2023.

All this, and we haven’t even talked about the tipping points for large glaciers.

Muizzu might claim that we don’t see how bad it's getting, but all over the Maldives, storms are getting more severe and floods are happening more frequently. "Udha", or flooding waves, are also becoming more destructive, and happen unpredictably. This is highlighted in the NASA report, which says that the flooding will happen every year in 80% of atolls. Boats and harbors, along with roads and buildings will need repairing constantly after storms. It will be so severe and frequent that we won't be able to rebuild the infrastructure that is damaged.

This is considering only the coastal flooding aspect of climate change. When we factor in the damage done by increasingly intense ocean storms, more extreme heat waves, and longer lasting droughts, the conclusions become even starker.

What’s clear is that Dr.Muizzu doesn’t have a clue what he’s talking about. He waffles about adaptation with no clear knowledge or direction, and no strategy to deal with this existential threat. If his plan is to get through climate change on ~vibes~, then we really are quite f*#@ed!

Dr. @Mmuizzu will be on the wrong side of history, and spectacularly so.
