Why Recycling Plants Keep Catching Fire, by @ciaraCnugent. As recycling fires go, the 56 Hour #RichmondPlasticFire was dramatic, yet not an isolated incident: at least 2 similar fires broke out the same day in NJ & Alberta. @mayordavesnow@earlham1847

The recycling facility that went in up in flames in Indiana created a toxic plume of smoke that forced thousands to evacuate. It's an egregious, horrifying situation — and also one plastics fire of many. https://t.co/iOY0QPVs9e via @Verge
Russia’s White nationalists are making U.S. connections.
This week on Reveal, @greenblattmark speaks with a neo-Nazi who invited members of the Russian Imperial Movement to the U.S. and connected them to his network of American White power extremists. https://t.co/3WZuH10bsj

#Quaker worship uses silence - but does that mean it's a theological blank space? I don't think so. New blog post from an old conference paper which might speak to questions @MarkDRuss has been discussing recently (and also mentions @manofasini's work): https://t.co/Um6lwgo4DF
In 1927 Philadelphia Quakers were advised to take “care in speech” using only statements that “convey the exact truth without exaggeration or omission of essential facts.” They were reminded: “false impressions may be conveyed by actions and appearance, no less than by words.”
Quaker Helen Steven wrote that she found comfort in:
“the idea of a God who is “closer than breathing”, the very ground of our being. This shifts the entire focus of the divine .. to an immediate immanent presence within every one of us, constantly present and constantly loving.”
“Protests are well known, and popular. The trouble is, when I look back on the one-off protests I’ve joined over the years, I don’t remember a single one that changed the policy we were protesting against.”

Did you know Virginia students get one day off a year to protest? Ranger Balleisen and students at nearly 100 other high schools plan to use one tomorrow to protest @GovernorVA's model school trans policies. @wusa9@PrideLiberation https://t.co/V627GddCiP
Just finished the graphic novel "Prophet Against Slavery" by @LesterMecca & Paul Buhle based on @MarcusRediker's "The Fearless Benjamin Lay." Highlights @JohanGaltung's typology of violence/peace mediated through the Quaker tradition before the Revolutionary war with slavery.
Five years ago today, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons opened for signature in New York.
More countries should sign and ratify it – and work to bring the era of nuclear weapons to a permanent end.

Rich comments on being "divisive" from the person who started a teacher tip line, is focused more on "CRT" in K-12 rather than pandemic learning loss or educating kids for 21st Century jobs & appoints Confederate apologists to state history boards https://t.co/heAPfhhaS6
"My Quaker education didn't just point me on one path," Paige Martin says. "They guided me on a journey…through dialogue, through inquiry." Being able to help other young people on their similar journeys is what prompted Paige to become a teacher as well. https://t.co/KD4THUfBMf
22 September is Loss & Damage Action Day. Quakers are taking action in solidarity with communities bearing the brunt of the climate crisis. Find out how to get involved in @BritishQuakers 'Make Polluters Pay' campaign: https://t.co/fF7TBaeerd

In 1929 Quaker scientist Arthur Eddington drew a parallel between Quakers and scientists in their rejection of creeds:
“The spirit of seeking which animates us refuses to regard any kind of creed as its goal.”
He felt that a “living belief” should be open to undiscovered truths.
