Was honoured to meet Sebastian Tow, one of 12 Canadians on the Global Sumud Flotilla trying to bring aid to Gaza. His report of horrific violations by the IDF, including piracy in international waters, beatings and sexual assault is harrowing. Canada should respond strongly now.
Here’s just one of the unprecedented measures the Liberals pushed through at the end of this session:
Cabinet ministers will now be allowed to authorize the use of banned pesticides in the name of “national economic security.”
Even if they’ve been deemed unsafe for human health.
Debate was shut down, and scientists, public health and environmental experts were not allowed to testify before the bill was passed.
Another gift to powerful corporations at the expense of Canadians.
Legislation by lobbyists.

The continuing attacks by Israel on Gaza - killing civilians, including children every time - are simply appalling. They are clear crimes against humanity.
There is no justification for these murderous actions whatsoever.
Canada must apply fully sanctions on Israel now.
The Liberals have used their newly acquired majority to push through major changes to Canada’s laws at the last minute and shut down debate on legislation with major implications for the lives of all Canadians.
This is not normal. This is what happens when a government thinks it can act with impunity.
Another crammed Air Canada flight, delays and cancellations, grumpy people, crappy WiFi…
But half of us are on cloud 9, peering at stuttering images from Vancouver, cheering wildly!
What a game.
Major Canadian experts in internet security and privacy - like @RonDeibert, @OpenMediaOrg and @cancivlib - are absolutely freaking out about Bill C-22.
They’re sounding massive alarms, warning that it could:
- force companies to keep metadata for up to a year, making a vast trove of personal information vulnerable to leaks and hacks
- make encryption meaningless by creating backdoors in software that allow police and gov. agencies to scoop up our personal data and messages
- give US police and spy agencies direct access to Canadians’ personal data without warning or oversight
So what is the Carney government doing? Ramming C-22 through in the dying hours of the session.
Meanwhile, Minister Solomon offers a retail sales pitch for potential powers of a new regulator that won’t even exist for at least 18 months.
Instead of just banning surveillance pricing and protecting us from other forms of digital spying and extraction.
Bill C-22 is a disaster and should be withdrawn.
Avi Lewis: The government of Canada just can't seem to summon the moral clarity and resolve to criticize both the government of Israel and take meaningful measures to intervene in an ongoing genocide and speak up against groups that are providing political cover for it.
The federal government has tabled a new water bill that backtracks on recognizing the human right to water for First Nations. This is shameful, and it is a slap in the face of communities who have been waiting for decades to have safe drinking water.
This government has failed for more than 10 years to fulfill its promise to end boil water advisories. And yet it moves at breakneck speed to deliver for Corporate Canada.
Prime Minister Carney is rushing Canada in the wrong direction.
Lewis: I found the PM's comments about the Iran war being worth it to be really disturbing, shocking as a Canadian. I want to know who the PM thinks it was worth it for. For thousands of civilians who were killed, for the 168 schoolgirls who were killed on the very first night ... Who was it worth it for?
The Carney Liberals are slashing $60 billion from the services Canadians rely on — including over $2 billion from Indigenous programs. They're demanding sacrifices from working people, while handing out billions in corporate welfare. The NDP will fight this every step of the way.
Breaking up the giant grocer monopoly in Canada would do more to reduce food prices.
Strengthening and enforcing anti-competition laws would also help.
Oil companies will capture $90 BILLION this year from the war on Iran. Canadians are paying for it at the pump.
New Democrats are calling it what it is: war profiteering.
It's time to tax this unearned windfall and put that money back in Canadians' pockets.
We are in a climate emergency, something folks across Canada already routinely experience through escalating wildfires and other extreme weather events.
I, along with our leader @avilewis and my @NDP colleagues, stand in solidarity with communities and civil society organizations across Canada to send a clear message to Prime Minister Carney:
It is extremely dangerous to roll back environmental protections and fast-track projects while ignoring the government’s Constitutional duty to consult and accommodate Indigenous peoples most impacted by these projects.
That’s why yesterday, on behalf of the NDP, I joined environmental organizations from across Canada calling on this Liberal government to stop undermining decades of progress on environmental protections and to respect its constitutional duty to consult, accommodate and obtain the free, prior and informed consent of Indigenous peoples.
Israel has been credibly accused of committing genocide, war crimes and ethnic cleansing. It has been ordered to cease by an international court. It is in violation of numerous treaties and UN resolutions.
When is Canada going to align our foreign policy and implement sanctions?
The new Liberals: bringing in “a massive, business-friendly bonanza of arms procurement and tax cuts, paid for through austerity for health care and other social programs that benefit ordinary people.”
Is that what Canadians voted for?
Federal Liberals and Ford Conservatives clearly tried to slip this by until they ran into a wall of public opposition. Both like giveaways of public resources to corporate interests and are willing to violate citizens’ interests and the environment to do so. NDP is stopping them!
