Bem-vindo to our friends from São Paulo! It was an honor to exchange knowledge and ideas with our social service counterparts from São Paulo, and share our approach for serving people experiencing street homelessness with a tour of Washington Street Safe Haven. #NYCDSSCares
Tonight I was inspired to meet so many incredible young people who completed high school while living in shelter. Many of them are going on to college, and I know they will all go on to do great things. Congratulations! #NYCDSSCares
Congrats, Future Leaders! Tonight @nycdsscommr and agency staff honor students who have completed high school while living in shelter, many of them college bound. In addition, 12 outstanding students received college scholarships from the Thompson Family Benevolent Fund.
Today I joined @GovKathyHochul, Deputy Mayor Arteaga, @BrGround President Rosen, @NYSomh Commissioner Sullivan, Deputy Borough President Council and others to break ground on Sparrow Square, with 1k units of affordable and supportive housing, shelter space, and more #NYCDSSCares
It is often said that soccer is more than a game. That truth was evident as I joined residents at the Bruckner Boulevard shelter in the Bronx to watch Senegal take on France in the World Cup.
In the United States, the culture of soccer has long been carried by immigrants — people who have brought their clubs, traditions, and love of the game with them from around the world. Many of the residents at Bruckner know what it means to leave one home behind while seeking refuge in another, and the immense challenges that journey can bring.
For just a few hours, the match offered something more than entertainment. It offered humanity, reprieve, and a momentary break from hardship. Most importantly, it offered community. For so many people around the world, that is what makes soccer the beautiful game.
Thank you, @HSUNYC, for hosting @NYCDSSCommr earlier today. Commissioner Dalton spoke directly about NYC DSS’ commitment to open, transparent communication with homeless services providers across New York City. Direct dialogue like this strengthens our partnership. #NYCDSSCares
The World Cup isn’t just coming to NYC, today it came to kids in @HelpUSA shelter in Brooklyn. DSS First Deputy Commissioner Saratu Ghartey joined FIFA and @StreetSoccerUSA to bring FIFA legend Robert Pires to join children for games, photo-ops, and a soccer clinic. #NYCDSSCares
