Led by team owner Woody Johnson, the New York Jets have now helped sanction girls flag football as an official varsity sport in New York City (2012), New York State (2023), and New Jersey (2026), annually supporting and creating opportunities for 7,000 athletes.

After nearly 100 games across seven states featuring 300 athletes, the Jets and ECAC, backed by a $1M donation from the Betty Wold Johnson Foundation, helped drive long-term growth while creating new pathways for young women to compete at the highest level.
This weekend, the Jets will host the inaugural ECAC Women’s Flag Football Conference Tournament at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center. Formed this past December and directed by team owner Woody Johnson, with support from a $1 million grant from the Betty Wold Johnson Foundation, the ECAC is now the largest collegiate women’s flag football league in the nation.

The ECAC/Jets Women’s Flag Football League, the largest collegiate women’s flag league in the nation, will culminate its inaugural season May 3rd at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center, with eight teams competing for “The Betty” trophy, honoring the legacy of Betty Wold Johnson.

The Jets celebrated girls flag football at every level through a three-week series of events across the U.S., UK, and Ireland—culminating this week in Dublin, where 2025 team captains Marcelino McCrary-Ball and Jamien Sherwood were on site to support the initiatives.
Fueled by over a $1.2M commitment since December from the Betty Wold Johnson Foundation, the Jets support nearly 7,000 female athletes annually, expanding access and opportunity for women in football.
