He was 34. Off duty. Waiting to tee off at Forest Park in Queens. When I lived in queens, I would run through the tree infested park. The sun would filter through the welcoming shade in geometric rays of light in the heat of the summer.

Michael was supposed to play golf.

Then a plane hit the World Trade Center.

His sister Patricia worked on the 72nd floor of the South Tower.

Michael Weinberg did not wait.
He ran without hesitation.

Traffic stopped him. He left his car in Long Island City and climbed onto whatever emergency vehicle would take him closer. He reached Engine 1, Ladder 24. He geared up. He drove Chaplain Mychal Judge and Captain Daniel Brethel toward the towers.

His sister got out.
He did not.

When the South Tower came down, Weinberg and Brethel tried to take cover under a fire truck. None of them made it.

His father Morty, a firefighter himself, said he knew immediately. There was no question in his voice. Only the certainty of a father who understood
exactly what his son had run toward.

That morning his older brother called Patricia on the Brooklyn Bridge and said, “Thank God you’re all right. And Michael is on vacation.”

At that same moment, Michael was already there.
He made his choice in the time it takes to put down a golf club.

My brother was a volunteer medic who ran towards danger. My firefighter buddy, Mario was unreachable.

I thought he was gone.

He survived and has a beautiful family after that horrific attack

This beautiful and heroic man did not

I have undertaken this project to put a face to 9/11 by posting photos of everyone killed that day. If after everything that happened you can vote for the ideology that caused it then it's as if you are killing them yourself! Pictured below was 29 year old Christopher Amoroso who was a Port Authority police officer. Here he is famously shown helping a pregnant woman out of the towers. He ran back in four times and was killed when the North Tower imploded. He left behind a wife and 19 month old daughter and to forget even a single one of these people is a blasphemy!

My bigger problem with Jelly Roll is what fame appears to have done to him.

The guy built his entire brand around being an outlaw, an outsider, somebody who survived the system and didn’t belong to it.

Now look at him.

Somewhere between the awards, corporate machine, celebrity circles and nonstop praise, the rebel started looking like part of the establishment he once represented an escape from.

Maybe he changed. Maybe the machine changed him.

Either way, I’m not buying the package anymore.
