It’s not just localStorage. Local storage helps for quick resumes on the same device, but the real work happens with server-side synced state.

Here’s how it works at a high level:

When we watch a video, the client (TV, phone, browser) periodically sends progress events to Netflix’s backend - things like video_id, user_id, timestamp, and device_id.
This is usually done every few seconds or at meaningful checkpoints (pause, seek, app background, stop).

That progress is stored in a highly available, low-latency datastore keyed by (user_id, video_id). Something like DynamoDB-style storage optimized for fast reads and writes at massive scale.

When we open Netflix on another device, the app fetches our last known progress from the server, merges it with any local cache, and resumes playback from that exact timestamp. If there’s a conflict (two devices active), the most recent update wins based on timestamps.

Local storage is just an optimization:

- Faster resume if we reopen the app immediately

- Works offline briefly but server state is the source of truth.

This design also enables:

- Resume across devices

- Continue watching lists

- Recommendations and analytics

- Accurate “watched” vs “unfinished” signals

Netflix treats playback position as user state, not device state.

Local storage helps with UX, but distributed, synced backend state is what makes it seamless at scale.

Usha Chilukuri comes from a very religious Telugu Vaidiki Brahmin family of Andhra Pradesh. Her grandfather made a trek to Varanasi on foot to study the Vedas. They were all proficient scholars of Gita and Sanskrit.

Today, her husband JD Vance blatantly lied when he said she comes from an atheist family. This he said to please his voter base who are fanatical Christians and White supremacists.

It is appalling that Usha has not yet uttered a word to standup for her ancestors, family, culture and religion. Vance basically indicated that her culture and ancestry has no place either in America or his house. For the sake of his bigoted identity politics, he lied about them and smeared their identity.

Our ancestors were very poor. Yet, they were ready to give up their lives to protect their civilization. But their prosperous descendants cannot even take a verbal stand in defence of it . What explains this fall of conviction? Does greed manage to do what brutality could not?
