The rehabilitation of Wanezi Dam in Insiza District, Matabeleland South Province, is transforming rural livelihoods by expanding access to irrigation, clean water and fisheries, while reinforcing the Second Republic's development philosophy that "a dam is an economic concept."

The revitalised dam is unlocking new economic opportunities for surrounding communities by supporting year-round agricultural production, improving household water security and creating sustainable income-generating activities through fisheries.

The project is expected to strengthen food security by enabling irrigation farming, reducing reliance on rain-fed agriculture and boosting productivity in a region prone to recurrent droughts. Communities are also benefiting from improved access to safe water for domestic use and livestock, enhancing public health and agricultural resilience.

In addition, the rehabilitation has opened opportunities for fish farming, creating new sources of nutrition, employment and income for local households while stimulating broader rural economic development.

The Wanezi Dam project forms part of the Government's wider strategy to maximise the economic value of water infrastructure under the Rural Development 8.0 model. Guided by President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa's vision that "a dam is an economic concept," the initiative demonstrates how strategic investment in water infrastructure can drive agricultural transformation, rural industrialisation and inclusive economic growth.

As Zimbabwe continues to rehabilitate and construct dams nationwide, projects such as Wanezi are helping build climate resilience, improve livelihoods and advance the country's Vision 2030 aspirations of achieving an empowered upper middle-income economy.
