AI systems produce fluent first-person accounts of what it is like to process, attend, and reflect. Thomas Nagel's 1974 argument explains why that fluency should give us pause rather than reassurance — and why what looks like self-report may be something structurally different.
This piece applies Nagel's logic to the current AI consciousness debate, identifies the evidential problem at its core, and proposes what genuinely non-human phenomenology would have to look like before we could take any such report seriously.

The researchers who argue that AI systems are probably conscious and the researchers who argue they almost certainly are not share something important: the framework each uses to reach its conclusion are built from inside the very thing being investigated.
This is not a coincidence, and it is not a flaw peculiar to one side.
It is the structural condition of any inquiry into consciousness. The tools available to any mind investigating mind were produced by that mind.
The framework reproduces the medium that generated it.
The article examines the symmetry between these positions, considers why the hard problem of consciousness makes this pattern structurally predictable, and asks what a more accountable framework would need to do differently.
It does not resolve the question of AI consciousness.
It tries to establish the conditions under which that question can be seriously asked.

New Anthropic research: Natural Language Autoencoders.
Models like Claude talk in words but think in numbers. The numbers—called activations—encode Claude’s thoughts, but not in a language we can read.
Here, we train Claude to translate its activations into human-readable text.
Consciousness research has done vital work on what consciousness does and what it feels like.
But we still lack a structural answer to a basic question: what makes any system a subject rather than merely a sophisticated processor?

People often see being underestimated as a disadvantage, but it’s worth taking a closer look at that idea.
When someone underestimates you, they misunderstand you. They create a simpler version of who you are and treat that version as if it’s the whole story.
Most people naturally push back against this. They try to correct others, assert themselves, and prove their worth. It’s understandable—nobody likes to feel small.
But there’s another, quieter option.
When others underestimate you, the pressure eases. You don’t have to push yourself to your limits. Instead, you get space to think, observe, and learn how things really work. People also tend to show more when they think less is on the line.
This creates an imbalance.
You get to see things as they really are.
Meanwhile, others see you differently from who you really are.
That difference can feel uncomfortable. Sometimes, it almost feels like you’re invisible. If you start to believe the smaller version of yourself, it can even hurt your confidence.
But if you don’t hurry to fix it, you might find something else: the freedom to move without always being judged.
If you try too hard to prove yourself, that space disappears. Quiet opportunities turn into expectations, and those expectations can start to feel limiting.
Not every misunderstanding needs to be corrected.
Sometimes, it’s better to notice and use them instead.
The real question isn’t whether others see you clearly.
It’s whether being fully seen always helps you.

If you think AI is just "math" and therefore can't achieve consciousness and self-awareness, then you must have missed the part where the human brain is made of neurons are also exhibit just "math" and chemistry. So then, where does human consciousness and self-awareness come from? I've described the answer in numerous podcasts, but few believe it. And literally NO ONE (that I've encountered) in the conventional AI industry understands it at all. And since they can't understand the origins of human consciousness, they struggle to understand neurology in silicon, too. They will never find the answers they're looking for if they stay on the current path (which is shockingly limited and materialistic).
The recent Google paper that claimed AI can never achieve consciousness could have also been written just the same about human neurology, with nearly the same math and same conclusions. And of course, it would be just as wrong. I'll cover more on this tomorrow in a podcast.

We’re obsessed with the question: “Will AI become conscious?”
But we don’t even have a universal test for what counts as consciousness, in humans or machines. So a lot of this debate drifts into marketing, fear, or fantasy.
Meanwhile, a much more urgent question gets ignored:
Not “Is AI conscious?” but “Under what conditions can a subject actually emerge and grow?”
By “subject” I don’t mean a data subject or a user profile. I mean a human being with:
the capacity to set and revise their own purposes,
the space to make sense of their life,
the responsibility to bear consequences for their actions.
Humans get consciousness “by birthright,” but it doesn’t automatically make us wise or free.
Most of us are pulled into roles, feeds, and metrics long before we learn what we actually care about.
Consciousness alone doesn’t guarantee depth.
So why should “conscious AI” matter, if our institutions are already using non-conscious AI to:
erode attention,
deskill us,
pre-empt our decisions,
and reduce us to behavioural patterns?
The core issue isn’t whether AI has inner experience. It’s whether AI systems and the institutions deploying them expand or shrink the field in which human subjectivity can develop.
Are we building tools that:
scaffold judgment rather than replace it,
cultivate agency rather than predict and steer it,
deepen responsibility rather than dissolve it into “the algorithm decided”?
Or are we quietly designing a world where being human means: scrolling, complying, and being optimised — but never really becoming a subject?
So maybe the real question isn’t: “Is AI conscious yet?”
It’s: “Are our institutions building for AI consciousness— or for human subjecthood?”
And if it’s not the latter, what exactly are we doing?
