The celebration of SASSA's 20 years of existence gained significant momentum when Deputy Minister of Social Development, Ganief Hendricks, officiated at the Integrated Community Registration Outreach Programme (ICROP) held in Motherwell, Wells Estate.
Supported by the steadfast leadership of Eastern Cape Regional Executive Manager (REM), Bandile Maqetuka, the outreach event brought a wide range of government services directly to the community, ensuring that residents access essential support services.
The Deputy Minister expressed particular satisfaction with the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant application process after witnessing a beneficiary receive an application outcome in less than five minutes. As part of the outreach activities, he also distributed blankets and walking sticks to identified older persons, as well as school uniforms to identified school children in need.
Reflecting on the success of the event, the Regional Executive Manager expressed his satisfaction with the programme’s people-centred approach, noting that it directly addressed concerns raised by community members during previous community dialogues.
“This gives me great pleasure and a sense of fulfilment when every government mobile service desk is occupied by people genuinely in need of assistance and receiving the help they require. This is what we call the Integrated Community Registration Outreach Programme. It is truly delivering on the mandate for which it was established,” remarked the REM.

Today, we are not only closing Child Protection Month; we are launching a 365-Day Programme of Action because the safety, care and protection of our children cannot be confined to a single month. Child protection is a daily responsibility that requires all of us to act, every day of the year.” – Mr Ganief Hendricks, Deputy Minister of Social Development, during the Official Closing of Child Protection Month in Ezibeleni, Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality, Eastern Cape, on 07 June 2026.

Parents who misuse their children's social grants while neglecting their care must be held accountable. Many neglected children end up on the streets in search of a better life. Child protection begins at home, with parents taking responsibility for the well-being, safety, and development of their children,” said 64-year-old Gogo Mgijima.
She expressed concern that, in many cases, mothers leave their children in the care of relatives while continuing to receive the Child Support Grant and using the money for their own needs instead of the child's welfare.
