FIFA expects 6 billion people to watch the 2026 World Cup somehow. That's three out of every four humans on Earth. The 2022 final in Qatar pulled 1.42 billion viewers alone, the biggest TV audience for any sporting event, ever. FIFA's expected take for the 4-year cycle has been raised twice, from $11 billion to $13 billion. The 2026 tournament alone is on track for $8.9 billion. The Paris Olympics in 2024 brought in $5.24 billion. The 2026 World Cup is on track to earn 70% more than that.

So: why Shakira. 79 million people listen to her on Spotify every month. Her current tour just became the biggest-earning Latin tour in history. $421 million across 86 shows, 3.3 million tickets sold. Last week she played a free concert in Rio for 2 million people on Copacabana beach. 2 million. For free.

Why Burna Boy. He's the biggest African artist on Spotify right now. Almost 2 billion streams across 2025, the biggest year any African artist has ever had on the platform. 25 million monthly listeners. Music streaming across sub-Saharan Africa grew 114% in 2024, mostly driven by Afrobeats. Faster than any other region.

You pair them, and FIFA gets two things. Latin America (where football is everything) and Africa (where music streaming is exploding). The teaser was filmed at Maracanã in Rio, one of football's most legendary stadiums. The dancers are wearing the colors of national teams: Brazil, USA, Argentina, Japan. Every market FIFA wants is in that video frame.

The 2026 tournament is also the first World Cup played in North American prime time since 1994. Group-stage games run 12pm-6pm ET instead of 2am. That means way more Americans tune in, and way higher ad rates per slot. Across the three host countries (USA, Canada, Mexico), the whole tournament will add $40.9 billion to the world economy and create 824,000 jobs.

So when you see Shakira holding a soccer ball at Maracanã with Burna Boy on the track, you're looking at the biggest commercial music decision in tournament history. Pick the woman with the most-watched music video by any female artist ever. Pair her with the most-streamed African artist on the planet. Set it at one of football's most legendary stadiums. Drop it 4 weeks before kickoff. FIFA is running this like the $13 billion business it is.

The FIRS+FRANCE Tax deal must be scrapped. I said it 9 months ago at the House of Assembly that we need to protect our Tax Sovereignty as we discuss this tax reforms. All the signs have been there.

🇳🇬 Nigerians, Bola Ahmed Tinubu is about to hand our taxes and economic data to France.

Yesterday, December 10, the FIRS signed a Memorandum of Understanding with France’s tax authority at the French Embassy in Abuja.

France will provide AI audits, automated compliance, real-time analytics, and cybersecurity tools. In return, Nigeria will share insights from our digital economy and tax system, including international taxation issues like transfer pricing, profit shifting, and multinational compliance.

The government claims no raw taxpayer files will leave the country, but sensitive aggregated data will.

The truth is, this data can reveal key financial patterns and give France visibility into our economy. Once it leaves, we can’t get it back, putting our national economic sovereignty at risk.

France has been losing influence across West Africa, with Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger pushing back. Now, while those doors close, Nigeria appears ready to open a new one, putting our fiscal independence at risk.

This MoU could compromise our control over our revenue system, expose sensitive economic data, and weaken Nigeria’s fiscal independence. We are big enough to manage our own tax system and employ our own experts.

This deal should be paused or renegotiated to protect Nigerian taxpayers and safeguard the sovereignty of our economy.
