The 12th Calestous Juma Executive Dialogue (#CJED), taking place in Addis Ababa on 12–13 February 2026, convenes leaders from policy, science and industry to advance science, technology and innovation for Africa—this year spotlighting science communication as a driver of trust and impact.
In his keynote, Dr Alex Essome, Co-Chair of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Sustainable Development, speaking on “The Future of Science Communication in Africa and the Global South” explored how science communication shapes trust, policy and innovation across Africa and the Global South.
He emphasised that communicating science is deeply cultural, influencing how knowledge is understood, shared and acted upon.
The session positioned communication as essential infrastructure for progress. When science is accessible and culturally grounded, it becomes actionable and scalable.

What is the cost of science when its message never reaches the people who need it?
The Calestous Juma Executive Dialogue (CJED) opens today in Addis Ababa, convening researchers, communicators and policy leaders to strengthen how evidence informs decision-making across Africa and the Global South.
From science communication frameworks to practical capacity building, CJED focuses on translating research into action that drives development. The dialogue reflects a shared commitment to making science more visible, accessible and impactful.

What will it really take to build a thriving research and development ecosystem in Africa?
At the CJED Fellows Baraza during #STIWeek, the conversation moved beyond theory and into action. The room agreed: while government investment is the spark, it cannot be the whole fire.
To truly achieve the vision of #STISA2034, the private sector must step up. Speakers painted a clear picture of the future— one where we remove costly biotech import barriers, govern Research & Development with a clear hand, and build an ecosystem so competitive that our brightest minds choose to stay and build at home.
Government investment sends the signal, but it's the confidence of the entire market that will turn up the volume on #AfricanInnovation.

🇪🇹 Our SIFA FC team has landed at #STIWeek2026!
We are thrilled to be on the ground at the Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Week, a pivotal event on the margins of @_AfricanUnion Summit.
This year’s theme is all about Education, Entrepreneurship, and Employment – the “3 Es” that drive us every single day. It’s a perfect match! The conversations here are about turning big ideas into reality: sparking a skills revolution and building innovation ecosystems that create real opportunities. This is exactly what @SIFA_FC is all about—forging strong links between technical training (TVET) and industry to create meaningful jobs for Africa’s youth.
But we haven’t come alone. We’ve brought the stories of our incredible partners with us. At our booth, you’ll meet some of our amazing Ethiopian grantees who are changing the game on the ground. You’ll also get a digital tour of our projects from all eight of our partner countries, showcasing everything from cutting-edge infrastructure to groundbreaking skills models.
This isn’t just an exhibition for us; it’s a celebration of collaboration and a preview of the skilled, innovative future we are building together. @AUCEducation@SymerreGrey

The launch of STISA 2034 and the African EdTech 2030 Vision is more than policy — it is a promise to every learner, every teacher, and every researcher that Africa will invest in their potential.
“I call upon Member States to integrate STISA 2034 into national development plans, commit to investing at least 1% of GDP in R&D, and mainstream gender and youth in STI programmes. We must integrate STI into other development sectors such as agriculture, health, and trade. STISA 2034 prioritises strengthening governance and positioning Africa more effectively. Above all, let us place STI at the centre of all national development goals of every African country.” – Delivered by Dr Msingathi Sipuka, AUDA-NEPAD Chief of Staff on behalf of CEO, H.E. @nardosbthomas.
Behind these strategies are human stories: kids in rural Senegal accessing Wolof‑language digital courseware, scientists in Nairobi contributing to AI language models, teachers in Lagos gaining confidence in digital pedagogy. These are the lives we transform when we move from strategy to implementation.

It’s one thing to have a blueprint, but it’s another to start building. Today, we picked up the tools.
Day 2 of #STIWeek2026 was all about action as we began turning the #STISA2034 vision into reality.
The day moved from high-level strategy to hands-on collaboration. It started with a powerful fireside chat where leaders tackled the big questions: How do we turn ideas into industries? How do we weave our national policies into a strong, unified continental strategy?
A clear consensus emerged: real progress in African science and tech hinges on a powerful harmony of three things working together: funding, smart governance, and a deeply connected ecosystem.
This theme carried directly into a hands-on workshop where the message was put into practice. The day proved that collaboration is the true engine for Africa’s progress. We’re not just talking about the future; we’re building it together. @_AfricanUnion@AUCEducation@SymerreGrey
