DAY 360 OF 1000
Took a break from building, to quickly complete some sections in my Google Cybersecurity Course.
Currently learning about the Linux operating system.
Okay based on this Iโll take a leap
My name is Opeoluwa Opeifa
Iโm a creative director and brand designer. I work with startups and companies between 3 to 7 years old making 20 to 100 million naira in annual revenue.
Today I want to talk about brand storytelling and world building.
Brand storytelling is how a brand communicates what it believes, not just what it sells. For Chef Khudu, a Lagos soul food and BBQ brand, the story was already there. The founderโs name, Khudu, means โheartโ in Edo. Thatโs not a tagline. Thatโs a founding truth. Every visual decision in the identity refresh we built was anchored to that.
World building is what happens when the story needs somewhere to live. We created a bear mascot for Potbelly by Chef Khudu. Not just a character. A whole personality. Pot-belly silhouette. Orange pot hat. Cream sweater. Wooden spoon. 19 poses. The kind of character that makes people feel like they already know him before theyโve ever eaten the food.
Thatโs the difference.
Brand storytelling tells people what to feel.
World building gives them somewhere to feel it.
When you commit to a founder's story instead of a category, everything changes.
I built the complete Potbelly system around one principle: Chef Khudu's name means Heart.
Every choice the mascot, the colour, the mark flows from that.
Shared it publicly before showing him. Not to jump the gun. Because conviction doesn't apologize.
