AI is about power – over data, markets, resources, and information. Human rights are the check on that power and the path to ensuring AI serves people, not the other way around.

What would you do if your loved one was taken away, and no one would tell you where they are for 40 years?
This agony is not unique to Honduras. All over the world, families trapped by enforced disappearance grow old waiting for closure.
We mark 20 years of the UN Convention Against Enforced Disappearance. Grief never fades, and victims’ right to answers never expires.

I welcome the release of environmental HRD Đặng Đình Bách after serving five years in prison in Vietnam. @UN_SPExperts had previously expressed concern about his detention, which was found to be arbitrary and appeared to be related to his exercise of the right to defend, promote and strive for the protection and realization of Human Rights. Environmental HRD must be able to carry out their vital work without fear of criminalization, reprisals, or arbitrary detention.

Today's report underscores an urgent point: AI can be a force for good, advancing human rights and benefiting everyone. But that will only happen if we act now with effective safeguards, robust regulation and accountability when rights are harmed.
@OHCHRAsia is working w/ stakeholders across Thailand to strengthen protections against Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs) and protect civic space.
With the support from @EUinThailand, we recently partnered w/ the Court of Justice, human rights defenders and civil society organisations, and the Senate Subcommittee to prevent the misuse of legal proceedings and safeguard public participation.
Putting people to death is cruel and inhuman, and it has been a failure at every level.
I urge all States to join the overwhelming global consensus: the death penalty must end everywhere, for all offences.

Enforced disappearances still happen every day, leaving families without answers.
20 years after the Convention, the call remains clear: Victims first. Action now.

Hundreds of billions of dollars are still being poured into fossil fuels every year, while countries on the frontlines of the climate crisis are being forced into debt just to survive.
We need a decisive break with today’s failed climate finance policies.

Join us online at the Global Forum for Responsible Recruitment!
At #GFRR2026, UN Human Rights will highlight how unsafe recruitment pathways can expose migrant workers to exploitation, including trafficking into cyber scam operations, and examine the human rights deficits that persist in temporary labour migration programmes.
Together, we can advance rights-based solutions that place the dignity and rights of workers at the centre of labour migration governance.

Every year, an estimated 21 million adolescent girls in low and middle income countries become pregnant. Protecting adolescents’ rights means creating the conditions in which every girl can shape her own future: https://t.co/3Ks3uaHUjL
Torture is a heinous crime – in war or in peace. It is a fundamental assault on human dignity that shatters lives and fuels cycles of violence. We must stand with survivors and ensure their voices are at the heart of prevention, healing, and justice.
Human Rights are a central component of foreign and security policy. They are part of the toolbox of statecraft; a prism that goes across all aspects of governance.
My remarks to the European Parliament https://t.co/oHSNJbjbnG
🕯️ 26 June marks the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.
Torture annihilates the individual’s sense of dignity & self, radiates trauma through families, for generations, & degrades the institutional and moral order and foundation on which society depends.
Today, we honor victims & survivors. Their rights to truth, justice, accountability, rehabilitation, and reparation must be fully realized through approaches that are victim-centred, gender-responsive, & inclusive
We call on States & all individuals to unite in rejecting torture in all its forms and to end, without delay, the impunity that enables such grave violations to persist.
