Gorkhas started migrating to Northwest and Northeast India by the early nineteen centuries and started living in places like Dehradun, Rishikesh, Nainital, Almora, Dharmashala etc in Northwest and Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Gangtok, Siligiri, Guwahati, Shillong, Manipur etc in Northeast.
Gorkhas came to India in three ways:
1. Soldiering - as Gorkha soldiers in the British Indian Army.
2. Migrant workers - as roadmakers, bridge builders, miners, security, and household works.
3. Farming and animal husbandry with their own cows and Buffaloes herds.
There are said to be about 15m Indian Gorkhas of Nepali origin in India today, and about a million Nepalis working in India at any given time.
