A key innovation & workforce dev need & challenge this paper brings to mind is the need for voluntary irrigation audits + system maintenance & upgrades, residue mgmt/other strategies so that adv tech truly can improve productivity & profitability of ag's blue & green water use.
I worked in SWKS (Moscow area) in 2011 (photos are from then), I had fully irrigated corn plots make 70 bu. A lot of deja vu going on today. Several lessons learned by producers that year (a thread): #irrigation#kswx
Irrigation tech in this episode of the #RedDirtAgronomy Podcast!
Here what @OIrrigator had to say about #Irrigation research I’m the OkPanhandle.

We have a lot of fun doing these podcasts!
@oksoilwater wasn’t there to keep us on topic, so we veered from ag topics to…uhm, other things.
We hope @OIrrigator wasn’t scared off by @OSU_oilseeds, @OSU_NPK & @VideoDeke and will come back on sometime!
Episode 109 will drop Monday.
If you couldn’t tell by the airplanes in the sky (Loadmasters?), we are conducting irrigation energy and water audits in SW Oklahoma as we promised to the graduates of the Master Irrigator program. @BAEOkstate@OIrrigator@sumits1990
That 107 down in Altus, Ladies and Gentlemen, is THE highest temperature ever recorded on a May 9 in Oklahoma, going back to the 1880s. It tops Hollis' 106 from 2011. Yay? #okwx#okmesonet
Is poor weed control because of the #herbicide or your coverage? This is a great visual comparing 5GPA and 15GPA. Coverage is Key! we had a few calm hours for spraying corn herbicides in @TexasCorn plots with Pete Dotray, @kheflinTxAg @garynbigham
The reference evapotranspiration was 0.3" or more for 17 western counties yesterday according to @okmesonet! Probably the same today. Enough to suck all extractable moisture out of the the top 2" of a wet soil. Irrigation amounts should be decided keeping this in mind.
Thanks to all irrigators who participated in the OK Master Irrigator event yesterday. We learned a lot about irrigation methods and pumping systems in SW OK. Will start our water & energy audits soon. @okstatewater@OIrrigator
Do you want to participate in the Master Irrigator Program but are not sure if it is for you? The Master Irrigator program is for producers, farm technicians and managers, and crop consultants.

2022 Master Irrigator Program will be focusing on Southwest Oklahoma. More information on program, benefits and registration at program website https://t.co/FTo00NKxMm @oksoilwater@okstatewater @OSU_Irrigation
Day 2 of irrigation audit was fun. See the irrigation depth vs. distance for one tested system below. Any guesses what caused the spike?@WaterOPAIA@OIrrigator
Day 3 of irrigation audit was windy (18 mph), which helped us answer a key question: how much of the applied water is lost to wind drift. In this case, 17%! It would’ve been larger if nozzles were higher. Thanks @Buck_Farms for letting us test your systems. @OIrrigator
We are planning another trip to OK Panhandle to do irrigation energy and water audits. If you are from there, interested in this free service, and plan to irrigate in the next few weeks, let us know. @WaterOPAIA@sumits1990@oksoilwater@OIrrigator
