per youku's bts, xie yanlai's piercing is NOT a random choice but a reference to a figurine at marquis yi of zeng's tomb from the warring states (c. 475 – 221 BC) era. see the figurine in the photo.

the marquis was from the state of zeng, a neighbouring state of the state of chu (the basis of the drama) located in hubei, china, the tomb was discovered in 1977 and contained historical artifacts and graves. the figurines are supports of the musical instruments found inside the tomb.
