The Assembly and Demonstrations Bill, 2024, is currently undergoing public participation until September 9th, 2024. Here’s a brief overview of the key proposals in the Bill.

The Constitution of Kenya under Article 37 provides for the right to assemble, demonstrate, picket and present petitions to public authorities. The Bill proposes several interventions that define the manner of exercising the Right to Assemble, demonstrate, picket and present petitions as captured under the article.

1. The Bill proposes a requirement for members of the public who want to convene an assembly or demonstration to inform the police of their intention to assemble or demonstrate, at least 3 days and no more than 14 days before the demonstrations/protests.
