Rvers South East senatorial district bye-election in Khana and Gokana local government areas of Rivers state has largely been described as peaceful, though cases of the malfunctioning of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BIVAS, were noticed in some polling units.
The turnout of voters in Gokana and Khana local government areas was impressive and peaceful as the people came in their numbers to cast their votes for candidates of their choice.
In some polling units, the exercise was delayed due to issues of the malfunctioning of the BIVAS devices with voters urging INEC to up their game before the next general election.
There were reports of disenfranchisement emerging from several polling units monitored across the seven local government areas of Eleme, Tai, Gokana, Khana, Andoni, Opobo-Nkoro, and Oyigbo that make up the senatorial district.
While the voting process was relatively smooth in some locations despite early morning rainfall, the situation was different in other parts of the district.
Many voters who arrived early to exercise their franchise were left disappointed due to widespread malfunctioning of BVAS in most polling units.
Elsewhere INEC ad-hoc officials told https://t.co/blb05WOQOt that they had to resort to manual accreditation when the BIVAS malfunctioned, a process that violates the Electoral Act.
Voters expressed concerns regarding the integrity of the process ahead of the 2027 general elections and called on INEC to address the technical challenges so as to prevent a recurrence in future exercises.
The bye-election was conducted to fill the vacant seat following the death of former Senator Barinada Mpigi.

When foreigners invade our territory and violently rape defenseless women these are war crimes. Democrat judges give them aid, shelter not because they are “soft” but because they support the end game: the forced humiliation, dismantlement, domination and destruction of the West.
