Nigeria must take note. Yes, there are hundreds of violent criminals who happen to be Fulani, just as there are Muslim extremists. But they represent a tiny fraction of their communities. And are Christians or any group immune to crime or violence? Absolutely not. Every community has its share of offenders and millions of law-abiding citizens. One of those law-abiding Fulani is the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations.

When the government fails to protect its citizens, fear fills the vacuum, and that fear can be mischaracterised, then escalate into hate, and ultimately become something far worse. We must confront insecurity head-on, without criminalising entire ethnic or religious groups.
